Objective

Experimental cinema represents the most radical means of expression within motion-picture based visual culture at an international level.
In recent years many film festivals, conferences, journals, digital archives, workshops, community labs and filmclubs targeting experimental cinema have skyrocketed in popularity, which are now constituting a network of international strongholds and distribution centres. Despite the international tendency, experimental filmmaking in Hungary is practically non-existent. It's severly underrepresented status marks the biggest gap in contemporary Hungarian visual culture. The experimental film heroes and heroines of the former Balázs Béla Studio or the Kőbánya Amateur Film Studio are gradually being forgotten, and with them a genre that was internationally renowned in Hungary is disappearing. Apart from the artistic cactivities of a few isolated directors, underfunded or completely independent underground filmmaking groups, marginalised garage-publishers and a handful of academic researchers, experimental filmmaking currently has no discourse nor platforms in Hungary.

Celluloidra Revolverrel aims to organise Hungarian experimental cinema.

Program

Celluloidra Revolverrel is organising a complex experimental film expo in the summer of 2024 at the Kaleidoscope House in Esztergom, Hungary. The exact date and program will be announced after the application deadline (17.07.2024).

Entries

The event will consist of three interconnected activities (film festival – academic conference – workshops), for which the applications are open until 17.07.2024.

One of the primary activities of Celluloidra Revolverrel is to provide a platform for creators, with the aim of supporting yet to be recognised national and international experimental filmmakers. That being said, Celluloidra Revolverrel is launching an online entry call for emerging experimental filmmakers. Submitted films will be nominated through a pre-selection process. The nominated films will then be screened at the event, where they will be reviewed and awarded by our academic jury.

Enter with a lecture

The other core activity of Celluloidra Revolverrel is the elaboration of scientific and artistic discourse. During the conference, academic researchers and cultural professionals will present their scientific and artistic achievements. The activity will consist of conference panels, lectures, round-table discussions and artist talks. The aim of this is twofold: on one hand to present the scientific and artistic achievements of the genre in an academic manner, and on the other hand, to popularize and to make accessible the genre of experimental cinema.

Celluloidra Revolverrel also aims to promote technical knowledge and the experimental use of traditional film handling. The interactive workshop activities will introduce participants to various technical approaches, such as: scratching the emulsion, painting on, or even rotting the celluloid tape. The material created with the participants will be then digitalised by our technical staff and will be included in the event's audiovisual documentation.

The event will be documented by amateur experimental filmmakers, in order to provide further references and financial support for the emerging creators. The documentation of the event will be published in the form of an aftermovie. In addition, an illustrated experimental film abstract volume regarding the screened works and the lectures will also be published following the event.
